K'etetaalkkaanee: The One Who Paddled Among the People and Animals is the story of a man who walked all winter and paddled all summer on a journey in search of medicine power. It is the ancient tale of K'etetaalkkaanee as he leaves his mother's home and begins his search for the power he has dreamed of. The action centers on his attempt to overcome obstacles and become the first of his mother's sons to return home from a spiritual journey. He is strengthened by each difficult and dangerous adventure.
K'etetaalkkaanee is the third volume of Koyukon Athabaskan tales told by Catherine Attla in her native Denaakk'e and translated by Eliza Jones. In this story cycle, a series of episodes is united by a single character. The action takes place in the mythical past, when people and animals could talk with one another.
In northern Athabaskan culture, this epic was told in the winter, in a definite sequence, with a series of episodes recounted during several evenings. The stories served to entertain and inspire listeners as well to instruct them in cultural traditions and values. This volume, with a foreword by James Ruppert, represents the fullest account of this story cycle ever printed.
