These sensory systems help the fish detect movement and vibrations in the surrounding water, an important adaptation for survival in dark or turbulent underwater environments. The Kelp Greenling is closely related to other greenling species found in the North Pacific, yet it stands out because of its larger size, more colorful appearance, and preference for kelp-dominated habitats.
The natural range of the Kelp Greenling stretches along the Pacific coastline of North America, extending from parts of Alaska down through the coastal waters of Canada and into California.
