In the heart of Dubai's glittering skyline, where ambition meets tradition, Proclivity: The Inevitability of Us by Kaynath Mehmood unfolds a captivating tale of unspoken longing, rediscovered connection, and the undeniable pull of fate. Hamza, a successful civil engineer and co-founder of an elite British-curriculum school, has everything on paper: a thriving family business, respect, and influence. Yet, at twenty-seven, he remains haunted by memories of Rind, the brilliant, distant girl from his school days who never noticed his quiet admiration during their shared science project. As he steps into his role at the school, fate intervenes when he spots her among the staff-a poised science teacher, now engaged to another man, Shahbaz.
Rind, independent and focused, navigates her life with precision: teaching, friendships with colleagues Amanda and Nikita, and an arranged engagement that feels increasingly distant and unfulfilling. Shahbaz's calls go unanswered, his presence polite but detached, leaving her questioning the path laid out by family expectations. When Hamza reenters her world-not just as the school's owner but as her neighbor in an apartment building-their interactions spark an undercurrent of tension. Hamza's subtle acts of kindness, like baking her favorite sourdough bread or helping her mother with groceries, reveal a depth of feeling he struggles to conceal. Rind begins to notice: the intense gazes, the protective gestures, the way he falters around her. Conflicted by her engagement and growing awareness of Hamza's affection, she grapples with emotions she never anticipated.
As their paths intertwine through school events, chance encounters at cafes, and intimate moments like shared teas, the story delves into the ache of unrequited love turning mutual. Hamza's heartbreak peaks upon learning of her engagement, yet he persists quietly, learning to bake just to see her smile. Rind, frustrated with Shahbaz's indifference, starts seeing Hamza's quiet strength-his family-oriented values, his thoughtfulness during her mishaps, like arranging orthopedic sandals after she twists her ankle at a gala. Friends tease about his obvious infatuation, and family meetings blur lines, forcing Rind to confront her feelings. When her engagement crumbles under Shahbaz's unreliability, the barriers fall, leading to tender revelations and a slow-burn romance.
Culminating in a breathtaking proposal atop a luxurious balcony with drone-formed messages and fireworks over the Arabian Gulf, Rind accepts, embracing the inevitability of us. Their wedding-a humble nikah at Zabeel Mosque followed by a grand walima at the Waldorf Astoria-marks a union chosen freely, blending cultural reverence with personal joy. Now living in a beachfront villa in Jumeirah, their life softens into shared mornings by the sea, where love proves not just proclivity, but destiny.
This debut novel masterfully weaves themes of longing, cultural expectations, and self-discovery against Dubai's opulent backdrop. With alternating perspectives, Mehmood captures the quiet intensity of love that simmers before it boils, inviting readers to reflect on their own what ifs. Perfect for fans of slow-burn romances like The Kiss Quotient or It Happened One Summer, Proclivity reminds us that some connections are inevitable, no matter the detours.
