Is it possible to get so close to an author of more than 400 years ago that you can look over his shoulder, as it were, while he is at work? Yes, this is the case with Karel van Mander and two sections of his Schilder-Boeck (1604): the Interpretation of the Metamorphoses and Representation of Figures. Willem Lash's commentary reveals Van Mander's sources (including some very unexpected ones) and illustrates Van Mander's place in mythography. Mythology, Van Mander wants to make clear, is not so much a catalogue of vices, but rather an incitement to virtuous behavior. The Representation of Figures is above all a call to create allegories oneself based on the material provided.
