Kanz al-asrar was written by Muhammad Buziyan al-Gharisi al-Ma'askeri, a man who spent twenty years of his life as a disciple of the renowned Moroccan spiritual master, Mulay al-Arabi al-Darqawi (ca. 1743- 1823). Because Buziyan eventually became one of the al-Darqawi's scribes-- making copies of the amazing letters of spiritual guidance sent to the many zawiyas of the order-- he was both deeply infused with his Shaykh's spiritual teachings as well as a witness to how these teachings played out in day-to-day life. This makes Kanz a valuable companion volume to the Letters themselves, as well as a stand-alone compendium of the teachings and the unique people who were attracted to them.
