Jonny grew up on a cattle ranch in Carmel Valley in the early 1900s. When his Uncle, Charles McDougall, joined the French Royal Air Force to help defeat the Germans in World War I, he asked his ten-year-old nephew to look after his belongings he had just stashed in the barn. When a stranger claiming to be Charles friend came asking about his things, Jonny moved quickly, hiding one particular box in the back of a cave. Later, Jonny inspected the box and found an ancient kaleidoscope that Charles had discovered on a trip to Borneo. It was accompanied with a letter addressed to Jonny from his uncle, thanking him for hiding the scope. The letter also gave specific instructions for how to view the kaleidoscope. What Jonny saw was amazing. It brought him very close to his uncle...in a dogfight over the German lines.
