In loving memory of my grandad James Brightman, who worked hard to try to publish his work before his passing.Jimmy was born in 1930 to an uncaring working class family. He had difficulty with his reading but was artistically gifted. Unfortunately he got no help or encouragement with either at home or school. He was always getting into scrapes, for which he usually recieved a smack round the head from his father. But one scrape landed him into the arms of a family that showed him the love and care that he had never experienced at home. This gave him a new outlook that changed his whole life. While the story line of this book; the first by James Brightman, is fictional. He does draw heavily on his World War II experiences and the post war period. It is however in no way biographical, the choice of Jimmy as the name of the main character relates to one of the twists in the story line.
