Dive into the exciting and intoxicating life journey of Jenny, an Irish immigrant hoping to provide for her parents.
On a bright day in 1928, young Jenny arrives on the shores of America from County Roscommon, Ireland. With next to nothing to her name-save a staunch determination to make enough money to provide for her parents back home-Jenny begins the adventure of a lifetime.
Despite the warm welcome her sister May and cousins, Ella, Catherine, Alice, Eddie, Jack, Uncle Patrick, and Aunt Julia provide, Jenny faces a colder shoulder than she expected from a Jewish family she interviews with.
Amid contending with prejudice from employers-and even her own family-Jenny finally secures a job by negotiating with the Levines, a well-to-do family with a set of twins, Rebecca and Jeffrey.
Working for the Levines proves to be a life-altering change for her, and her life becomes intertwined with theirs. Caring deeply for both the children and the married couple, Jenny embarks on a decades-long career as the Levines' nanny, housekeeper, and more.
Readers of historical fiction will fall head-over-heels for Jenny's life of romance, high adventure, finance, and forgiveness. She's an invigorating main character to rally behind, with a great sense of humor and an eagerness for adventure. Despite setbacks, uncomfortable situations, and even arguments, Jenny sticks to her values, digs in her heels in determination, and works to constantly move towards her goals.
Fans of Brooklyn by Colm Tobin and Carnegie's Maid by Marie Benedict will appreciate Jenny's spirit and courage, as well as the novel's time period.
