This novel depicts the lives of a group of college students at the University of North Carolina during their freshman year. The main character is Ben Anderson, a smart, shy, and depressed young man who encounters comic ensemble including a blind man, two future ministers, and assorted other eccentrics who experience the ups and downs of 1968 culminating with the the great spring festival known as Jubilee. The book belongs to the same category as Salinger's Catcher in the Rye, Knowles's A Separate Peace, and Nichols's The Sterile Cuckoo.
