The Journey of This Unremarkable Life is a deeply personal memoir of childhood, family, displacement, loss, survival, and memory, set against the turbulent history of the Indian subcontinent. At its heart is the story of a boy growing up in Mymensingh, East Pakistan, in the years following Partition.
The memoir begins with life on Kachari Road, where Hindu and Muslim families lived alongside one another in an atmosphere of ordinary friendship and neighbourhood life. Gradually, however, political uncertainty and communal tensions entered this familiar world. The 1965 Indo-Pakistani War brought air-raid sirens, trenches, rumours and fear. Though the author was too young to understand the political forces behind these events, he sensed that the world of his childhood was changing.
Alongside this historical background are vivid memories of childhood-school, football, examinations, games, music lessons, festivals, neighbourhood adventures, boat trips on the Brahmaputra, and the simple pleasures of food. Some memories are humorous and innocent; others reveal early experiences of shame, fear, compassion and responsibility. A particularly dramatic episode occurs when the young author falls into the swollen Brahmaputra and nearly drowns. He survives because Nantu, an ordinary sweet-shop artisan, courageously dives into the river and rescues him. Decades later, Nantu remains unforgettable as the man who gave him back his life.
The memoir is also a tribute to people whose kindness transcended family and religious boundaries. Nonimashi, who lovingly cared for the author and fed him milk-rice, becomes a cherished figure of childhood. Her sudden death introduces him to the pain of irreversible loss. Syed Uncle, the Muslim milkman who crossed the Brahmaputra daily to bring milk to the family, remains another enduring symbol of human goodness and communal harmony.
As political conditions deteriorate, friends, neighbours and relatives begin leaving East Pakistan. The death of Satyen Jethamoshai, whose son is unable to reach him because of visa restrictions, exposes the cruelty of Partition in deeply personal terms. Eventually, the author's own family is forced to leave their ancestral home. Their journey through Benapole-Petrapole, Kolkata, Farakka, New Jalpaiguri, Siliguri, Guwahati and Assam is marked by uncertainty, hardship and exhaustion, but also by unexpected kindness.
In their new surroundings, the author grows through changing relationships, friendships, education, love and loss. A childhood misunderstanding about an examination essay involving an elephant becomes an early, almost accidental connection with writing. In later years, he develops into a writer, publishing books, stories and articles and eventually reaching a readership of more than a hundred thousand through digital writing.
Yet the memoir is not a celebration of achievement alone. It is a reflection on how an ordinary life can become intertwined with extraordinary historical events. Homes disappear, people die, friendships change, possessions are lost, and memories fade. What remains, the author discovers, is not wealth or status but affection, kindness, courage and the stories preserved in memory.
From the lanes of Mymensingh to Shillong and Assam, The Journey of This Unremarkable Life is ultimately a meditation on displacement, identity, survival and the passage of time. It is the story of an apparently ordinary life made extraordinary by history-and by the people whose love and kindness made that life worth remembering.
