All that was peculiar in the circumcision of Abraham, and the rites of Moses afterwards, even to the phylactery, was enjoined lest the people should forget God, a. sin to which they were prone, going so far in their apostacy as to offer their children in sacrifice to idols. Your further question, 'If any one, besides acknowledging Jesus to be Christ, should choose to observe the Mosaic institutions also, can he be saved?' I answer thus: 'I have the charity to think so, if he do not seduce others to imitate him by averring that they cannot be saved unless they do the same, ' my charity leading me to think more favourably of such than some of our Christians do. To the weak who are simply misled my charity extends, but not to the wilful misleader.
