Volume 3 finds Joseph and Mary, the parents of Jesus, living in Bethlehem. They have moved into a house and Joseph has found work in his trade. Life is good, they are happy, Jesus is beginning to toddle around, but one day wise men, Magi from the east come to their door bringing gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. When the wise men leave, Joseph is warned in a dream to leave quickly for Egypt as Herod is sending men to take the child's life. Joseph, Mary, and Jesus leave Bethlehem in the middle of the night barely escaping Herod's murderous rampage.
