It is 1879 Germany, and we hear the story of how three generations of Schmidt men have successfully supported their families making buttons. Each father teaches his trade to his eldest son. Along with the trade, the Schmidt men teach their sons to have patience and pride to achieve perfection with their buttons. The next Schmidt is 18-year-old Johannes who is thrust into making buttons on his own after losing his family and struggling through grief. He's working long hours making buttons to support himself and just doesn't have time for love. But the young women in town have their eye on the handsome young button maker as a suitable husband. He considers their flirtatious advances but his long hours give him no time for romance or courtship. His father told him he would someday meet a special woman, know she was the one, and make time.

He meets a scared and timid girl named Berta who is also dealing with grief and loneliness. He finds that working even longer days gives him one day a week to walk to Berta's house and help her with household chores. She is an unusual girl who is not after him which he finds appealing. Through mutual need and attraction, they fall for each other and overcome their loneliness. They marry and make plans for the future, but the Depression in Germany creates problems for Johannes and his ability to earn money making buttons.

Come along on the poignant journey of how the young button maker and his wife struggle in 19th century Germany. You will be there to witness their struggles, their happiness, and their tender moments. Important decisions need to be made which test their love for each other and the strength of their marriage.
