Johann Strauss, Father and Son: A Century of Light Music is a comprehensive biography of the Strauss family, focusing on the lives and works of Johann Strauss I and Johann Strauss II. Written by musicologist and historian H. E. Jacob, the book covers the period from the early 19th century through the turn of the 20th century, a time when the Strauss family was at the forefront of the Viennese music scene. The book begins with a detailed account of Johann Strauss I's early life, including his upbringing in a family of musicians and his early career as a violinist and conductor. It then goes on to explore his rise to fame as a composer of dance music, including his famous waltzes, polkas, and quadrilles. The second half of the book focuses on Johann Strauss II, who followed in his father's footsteps as a composer and conductor. The book covers his early life and career, including his struggles to establish himself as a composer in his own right. It also explores his relationship with his father and his eventual rise to fame as one of the most popular composers of his time.Throughout the book, Jacob provides detailed analyses of the Strauss family's music, including discussions of their musical style, influences, and innovations. He also places their music in the context of the broader cultural and political developments of the time, providing a rich and nuanced portrait of the Strauss family and their place in Viennese society.Overall, Johann Strauss, Father and Son: A Century of Light Music is an engaging and informative biography that will appeal to anyone interested in the history of music, the Strauss family, or the cultural history of Vienna. This is a new release of the original 1940 edition. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
