Joan is among the best-documented people of the entire Middle Ages - interrogated across fifteen sessions by men who meant to destroy her, then remembered, decades later, by the villagers and soldiers who had known her. From those two great trial records, this book rebuilds her life whole: the bell she came in from the fields to answer, the cold examination at Chinon, the standard she loved forty times more than her sword, and the Old Market at Rouen.
This is not the stained-glass saint, and it is not a novel. Nothing here is invented. No imagined dialogue, no guessed-at feelings - every line in quotation marks was truly spoken or written, and traces to its source. What emerges is fiercer and more human than the legend: a girl who wished an enemy's head off and bent the wish to God in the same breath; who dictated letters to kings with a hand that could not sign its name; who would not, at the end, unsay the voices - though one softer word would have saved her life.
