Jasper Thorn: A Story Of New York Life is a novel written by Maurice Francis Egan. The book is set in New York City during the late 19th century and follows the life of Jasper Thorn, a wealthy businessman who is determined to climb the social ladder and make a name for himself in high society. The story begins with Jasper's humble beginnings as a poor Irish immigrant and his rise to success as a successful businessman. Along the way, he encounters a cast of characters, including his wife, Mary, who is from a wealthy family and helps him navigate the upper echelons of society.Despite his success, Jasper is plagued by a sense of emptiness and a desire for more. He becomes obsessed with the idea of becoming a member of the elite social club, The Knickerbocker Club, and will stop at nothing to achieve this goal.As Jasper's obsession grows, he becomes increasingly isolated from his family and friends, and his behavior becomes increasingly erratic. Ultimately, his single-minded pursuit of social status leads to his downfall.Jasper Thorn: A Story Of New York Life is a compelling tale of ambition, obsession, and the high price of social climbing. Egan's vivid portrayal of New York City during this period and his nuanced exploration of the complexities of human nature make this book a must-read for anyone interested in the history of New York or the human condition. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
