Jason and the The Labours of Heracles follows the complete arc of this extraordinary life, from the deception surrounding his birth and Hera's relentless persecution to the Twelve Labours that carried him across the known world. It recounts his battles with the Nemean lion, the Lernaean Hydra, Geryon and Cerberus, while examining the people who assisted him, suffered beside him or died because of his actions.
The story continues beyond the famous Labours to his voyage with the Argonauts, the loss of Hylas, the first sack of Troy, his enslavement under Queen Omphale, the murder of Iphitus and the wars driven by broken promises and wounded honour. It concludes with the fall of Oechalia, Deianira's fatal mistake, the poisoned robe and the funeral pyre that carried Heracles from mortal agony to divine immortality.
Drawing upon surviving Greek and Roman literary traditions, this book presents Heracles neither as a flawless champion nor as a simple criminal. It explores the full contradiction of a hero who protected communities and destroyed households, endured injustice and inflicted it, accepted punishment and returned repeatedly to violence.
This is the story of Greece's greatest hero-and of the man who could overcome every monster except the danger within himself.
