Sent by the usurping King Pelias on a mission intended to end in his death, Jason assembles an extraordinary company and boards the newly built Argo. Among his companions are Heracles, Orpheus, Castor and Polydeuces, Peleus, Telamon and the winged sons of the North Wind. Together they cross the ancient Mediterranean and Black Sea worlds, confronting murderous rulers, supernatural creatures, the Clashing Rocks and the dangers of an unfamiliar coast.
Yet the Golden Fleece cannot be won through heroic strength alone.
In Colchis, Jason encounters Medea, daughter of King Aeetes and granddaughter of the Sun. Her knowledge protects him from the fire-breathing bulls, defeats the warriors born from dragon's teeth and overcomes the sleepless serpent guarding the fleece. Her help secures Jason's triumph-but requires her to abandon her family, homeland and former life.
Drawing carefully upon the surviving ancient sources, Jason and the Argonauts follows the complete story from the origins of the Golden Fleece to the building of the Argo, the gathering of Greece's heroes, the trials in Colchis and the dangerous voyage home. It also explores the real geography and ancient societies behind the legend while clearly distinguishing literary tradition from verifiable historical and archaeological evidence.
More than an adventure, this is a story of contested kingship, collective heroism and promises whose consequences outlived the voyage itself. Jason wins the prize, but Medea makes victory possible-and the cost of that victory follows them long after the Argo returns.
