Japan exhibits a firm non-nuclear weapons policy, most popularly articulated as the Three Non-Nuclear Principles of nonpossession, nonproduction, and nonintroduction of nuclear weapons. The policy only applies to nuclear weapons, not all nuclear technology; peaceful nuclear power is common in Japan, and accounts for 30% of Japanese electric production. The policy took decades to appear in written form. Following World War II and the deconstruction of the imperial military, Japan found itself dependent upon the U.S. nuclear umbrella from outside aggression. This was formalized in the Security Treaty Between the United States and Japan, a corollary to the Treaty of Peace with Japan, which authorized the U.S. to deploy military forces in Japan in order to contribute to the maintenance of the international peace and security in the Far East and to the security of Japan against armed attack from without.
