Born a woman in a suppressed caste family, Janaki Ammal had enough odds stacked against her to ensure she couldn't aspire, but aspire she did, and how!
She worked to make India's sugarcane sweeter, she ensured the protection our planet's rich biodiversity, she was the first woman scientist to be employed at the Royal Horticultural Society Garden at Wisley, and she held her own during the many times in the course of her meteoric career rise when she was, unsurprisingly, the only woman botanist in a room full of men. During World War 2, there are vivid accounts of her diving under the bed during the bombing, and carrying on working once the noise abated. No sweat.
