After the ecstasy, the laundry.
It is a joke about housework, and it is the most useful thing anyone has said about spiritual practice in fifty years. Jack Kornfield used it as a book title in 2000. What it names is the problem he has spent his working life on: a state is reachable, and a changed person is a different matter.
He is often described as the man who brought mindfulness to the West. He did not, and the book says so on the first page.
Intensive insight meditation was not waiting quietly in Asia for Western students to discover. It was a modern Asian reform. Ledi Sayadaw, Mingun Sayadaw, Mahasi Sayadaw and U Ba Khin, among others, opened systematic practice to lay people in Burma decades before Kornfield's generation arrived. There would have been nothing to carry home otherwise.
What he actually did is more specific, and more interesting.
He joined the Peace Corps in 1967, asked for a Buddhist country, and was assigned to medical teams in northeast Thailand. He ordained. Between 1969 and 1973 he trained under Ajahn Chah in the Thai Forest tradition and in the Burmese insight lineage. He came home, took a doctorate in clinical psychology, and then spent a decade on something with no glamour in it at all: premises, schedules, teacher training, ethics policies, and somebody to answer the telephone.
Inside:
- The two founding dates of the Insight Meditation Society - the decision in 1975 out of a three-month retreat, the centre at Barre opening on 14 February 1976 - and why writing only one of them throws information away
- The fourth founder the short version leaves out. Spirit Rock's own lineage account credits four, including Jacqueline Schwartz, later Mandell
- The one correction that runs through all of his teaching: that awareness without kindness is incomplete, and a mind trained only to observe can become another instrument of self-attack
- Forgiveness with every clause intact - it releases the person harmed, changes nothing about the harm, requires nothing of the offender, and keeps the boundary exactly where it was
- Spiritual bypassing is not his phrase. It is John Welwood's, from 1984. RAIN is not his either - the acronym is Michele McDonald's, and Tara Brach later developed a second version with a different fourth step
- What the research actually supports: the 2014 systematic review found small-to-moderate effects for anxiety, depression and pain, limited or insufficient evidence for a longer list of broader claims, and no evidence of superiority to any active treatment
- Why a doctorate is not a licence to treat, and a Dharma talk is not a therapy session
The criticism chapter does not rescue him. Insight meditation in America was psychologised, detraditionalised and individualised; the Asian lineages that produced it were pushed to the margins of their own story; and the institutions were built before the safeguards. Kornfield participated in all of it, and in the institution-building he was one of the principals.
Then there is the part that costs something to write. Charismatic authority, a closed community and a constituency with reason to defend the institution's reputation is a combination that creates real safeguarding risk. Spiritual attainment is not a safeguarding mechanism. The book puts that plainly, and does not use distance to soften it.
He is alive, still teaching, and still on a board at eighty-one. This is a career in progress, not a closed arc, and the book is written that way throughout.
Written for the general reader, not the seminar room. Verified sources, no invented scenes, no staged conversations, and the criticism given its due.
