What is Part 107? Does everyone need a Part 107 certificate to fly a drone in the United States?
The short answer is no, not everyone who wants to fly a drone needs a part 107 certificate, unless they intend on using that drone in the furtherance of a business.
There is a path for recreational pilots to fly unmanned aircraft, and those applicants need to take a simple online course and test to learn where they can operate their unmanned aircraft legally.
To be eligible to earn your part 107 certificate with a small unmanned aircraft system rating, a person must be at least 16 years of age, be able to read, speak, write and understand the English language,
Recreational Flyers can never earn any money flying their drones and can only fly for fun and recreation.
The big difference is commercial interest.
Part 107 remote pilots can fly for fun, but hobbyists can never fly for money.
Even if you are just promoting your business with a video from your drone, that is in furtherance of a business. A realtor that takes a photo for a listing without a part 107 could get serious fines that far exceed the cost of earning the certificate.
