In this interview CPT Wayne Sanders, Military Intelligence (MI), discusses his deployments to Iraq in 2004 and 2006. A trained SIGINT officer CPT Sanders deployed initially with his platoon in 2-14th CAV from the 1-25th Stryker Brigade Combat Team (SBCT) to work with the Prophet system in theater. Unfortunately, the training received in the States did not adequately prepare his platoon for what they would face in country but CPT Sanders describes how his Soldiers adapted and overcame and were able to be phenomenally successful during their deployment. CPT Sanders deployed again in 2006 as part of the operations officer (S3) plans section of the 502nd MI Battalion. CPT Sanders attended a human intelligence (HUMINT) collection training course in preparation for his deployment and due to the deployment of a new SIGINT collection system into theater, the Triton, CPT Sanders was sent to be in charge of this new system and the Soldiers who run it. CPT Sanders discusses the challenges he faced with this new system and also thee wonderful relationships he had with other intelligence officers (S2) throughout theater. CPT Sanders concludes his interview by stating that the Army does a good job training its force, especially MI.
