He went to Nicaragua to build a surf camp. He had no idea whose world he was entering.
In 2009, Jacksonville real-estate appraiser David Sluder walked away from the life he knew and headed south with an improbable plan: find an undiscovered stretch of Nicaragua's Pacific coast and build a surf camp from nothing.
What began as a search for empty waves quickly became something far stranger.
With his Jack Russell, Roxy, beside him, Sluder is pulled deeper into a Nicaragua most travelers never see-remote beaches, political connections, late-night parties, unlikely friendships, spectacular mistakes, and doors that seem to open with a single phone call.
At the center of that world is Frank, the charismatic Nicaraguan businessman who helped make the dream possible.
And then there is Danilo.
For weeks, Sluder knows him simply as an older family man whose home he is welcomed into. Then, during a night of Johnnie Walker Red and conversation, someone asks a seemingly innocent question:
Danilo... what's your last name?
The answer changes everything.
Blandón.
Suddenly Sluder realizes that the man sitting across from him is Danilo Blandón-the Nicaraguan whose name became inseparable from the Iran-Contra and crack-cocaine controversy later chronicled in Gary Webb's reporting and the Hollywood film Kill the Messenger.
And somehow, Sluder has ended up drinking with him while trying to build a surf camp.
But Inside the Orbit is not a history lesson or a political exposé. It is the true story of a man who thought he was chasing freedom and slowly began to realize that every open door was pulling him deeper into an orbit he did not yet understand.
Against that backdrop, GreenSurf Nicaragua begins to come alive. The first advertisement goes up. The first guests arrive. The waves are real. The dream actually works.
Until the river rises.
Years later, the Florida Times-Union would put Sluder and his surf operation on its Easter Sunday front page beneath the words LIVING A DREAM.
The photograph captured the dream.
It could not capture what was happening outside the frame.
Surfing. Adventure. Cocaine. Betrayal. Survival. Secrets. Second chances. And the first quiet movements of a story much larger than anyone involved could yet see.
Inside the Orbit is Book Two of The Domino Effect Series, a cinematic memoir about reinvention, consequence, and the extraordinary chain of events that can begin with one seemingly ordinary decision.
Because sometimes you don't realize you've entered someone else's world-
until you're already inside the orbit.
