I won't be magnified, /x-rayed, mapped, known by/ you or anyone, writes Jocelyn Heath in her wise and beautifully crafted debut collection, In the Cosmic Fugue, a book that explores the intersectionality of the bodily, emotional, psychic, and planetary such that they seem, by the end, of a piece: mysterious and unknowable, yet also-satisfyingly-plumbed. The book's poetic journey is one of self-discovery, and the self Heath uncovers through these sonically rich, and powerful poems is inarticulable, queer, sexy, enigmatic, vast. Compared to a black hole and a supernova the persona that drives this book is any and all of us: awed and enlarged by the cosmic grandness and complexity in which we live and at the same time cellularly small, alone-in search of who we are and who we might love. Heath places us within and without the cosmic spaces of our lives, pushing us to learn the thousand tiny gears wound to run the universe to find the tiny solar systems refracted infinitely across the body, and to relish what we discover along the way.
