移民现象一向为人类、社会、历史等学科所重视。其史料的收集、保存和研究，像其它项目那样分门别类、划分时段。因为它直观生动地展现着民众生活和社会发展的一个侧面。就像国内已经把二十世纪五六十年代的苏式建筑，作为文物保护起来以供研究一样，移民还在继续，特征已经转变。以往的习以为常，如今具有史料价值了。所以，值得追述、记录、传播。且以经历者的第一手材料为最宝贵。
我们到了美国，立即就被告知要融入主流社会。起先以为指改变生活习惯，喝可乐、吃汉堡。那东西实在不合口味，勉强为之不敢抱怨。倒是开汽车、住洋房为人向往。时间略长才知道，美国人的主流价值观主要是指行使公民权利。除了自食其力、照章纳税、选择自己在立法与行政机构里的代表之外，关心国家大事，监督以至凡事质疑政府行为乃是个中重点。此一意识之源大概可以上溯至古希腊城邦的公民社会。授予公民这个义务和权力的原理很简单：官员是民众所选，政府开支着纳税人的钱。对外来户而言，品评社会现象、监督政府职能，不仅有助加速加深了解新的生活环境，还能树立我们的主人翁感。
既然写评论，对时政的了解就不能仅限于上网、看电视。须得读理论、查历史、看专家学者的背景文章，找到不同的视角，拿出自己的观点。诚然，对于而立之后才到新大陆来的成年人，我们生活虽在主流之中，文化却在边缘之处。这是移民的文中原有之义、一体两面。巧取善用，就能提升文明程度
