As book three opens Longtack Sam and stumpy head for Dubbo in pursuit of Longtack's disappearing dad. With the trail going cold and no way to follow him, Longtack must get on with the business of surviving on the track and finding work in order to support his mother and sisters.
As Longtack and Stumpy travel, an altercation arises between Longtack, Stumpy and a big Irishman who invades their camp and tries to pinch their chips. Unbeknownst to Longtack that story was later to be spread and embellished considerably by unknown people. Colin once said The difference between truth and bullshit is enough time to get the story all bum up.
Continuing to deal with everyday life on the track
Longtack and Stumpy are drawn into fighting a fire, get ripped off by a dishonest farm manager who strings them along but does not pay them, face Court for train jumping, and spend a couple of days in the Wagga Wagga lock up.
When a conman tricks them into almost taking the blame for horse thieving they narrowly escape doing time in Albury prison.
