Who should you believe when everyone seems to have an answer?
Sometimes grown-ups disagree.
One person says doctors can't be trusted.
Someone else says giving people money will make them lazy.
Another is absolutely certain that they know exactly what is going on.
And when everyone sounds so sure, it can be hard to know what to believe.
In It's Okay to Trust an Expert, one curious child discovers that being confused doesn't mean something is wrong with you. Sometimes the world is complicated. Sometimes people are angry, scared, or frustrated. Sometimes someone has experienced something that's wrong and draws a much bigger conclusion that may not be true.
And usually, the loudest person simply isn't the one who knows the most about the subject.
Her dad helps her understand something important:
Everyone can be an expert in something. But nobody is an expert in everything.
A doctor may understand medicine.
An economist may understand wages and employment.
A mechanic may understand cars.
A scientist may understand their area of research.
Strong opinions, personal experience, or even confidence don't automatically make someone an expert in every subject.
But that doesn't mean we should distrust everyone, either.
Experts are human. Systems can be flawed. People can make mistakes. And sometimes legitimate problems within a system can make people angry or afraid.
This thoughtful children's picture book offers a gentle counterpoint to the growing distrust of expertise and anti-intellectualism that children encounter in the world around them. Rather than telling young readers to believe everything an authority figure or adult says, it introduces a more balanced idea:
It's okay to ask questions.
It's okay not to know.
It's okay to be scared or confused.
And it's okay to trust someone who has studied the thing you're trying to understand.
It's Okay to Trust an Expert is a conversation starter for families and educators who want to help children understand the difference between expertise, opinion, personal experience, and confidence.
It encourages curiosity without cynicism and trust without blind obedience.
Because you don't have to know everything yourself.
Sometimes, you just need to know who knows about it.
