Quasi ogni introduzione alla dottrina cristiana è scritta dall'interno di una sola tradizione. È un modo del tutto onesto di scrivere un libro, ma lascia scoperto un lettore: quello che vuole capire l'intera conversazione prima di decidere dove collocarsi.
Questo libro mette a confronto sei tradizioni: cattolica, luterana, riformata, battista, metodista-wesleyana e pentecostale. Ogni dottrina è presentata in tutte e sei, con tabelle comparative leggibili, così da vedere a colpo d'occhio ciò su cui c'è accordo e ciò su cui non c'è.
E c'è una promessa: ogni posizione è esposta nella sua forma più forte, con le parole che userebbero i suoi stessi difensori e con i passi biblici a cui essi stessi si richiamano. Questo libro non dice chi ha ragione. E non lo lascia intendere attraverso il tono, l'ordine o lo spazio concesso a una tesi.

Che cosa lo distingueLa maggior parte dei libri per principianti insegna una posizione. Questo insegna una capacità riconoscere un argomento teologico quando lo si incontra, riferirlo con onestà e capire che cosa sia davvero in gioco. Alcuni esercizi chiedono deliberatamente di esporre una tesi che non si condivide, perché saper formulare una posizione in termini che i suoi sostenitori accetterebbero è la prova di averla compresa.
Alla fine saprete che cosa insegnano sei tradizioni, perché ciascuna sostenga ciò che sostiene, e quali disaccordi siano profondi e quali più stretti di quanto la polemica lasci pensare.
