La Sonnambula (The Sleepwalker) is a two-act opera by Vincenzo Bellini with an Italian libretto by Felice Romani, based on a scenario for a ballet-pantomime written by Eugène Scribe and Jean-Pierre Aumer called La somnambule, ou L'arrivée d'un nouveau seigneur. The opera is known for its bel canto melodies and demanding vocal writing, particularly for the soprano role of Amina.
Set in a Swiss village, the story revolves around Amina, a sleepwalking maiden, and the misunderstandings that arise when she is found in the room of a visiting Count. Accusations of infidelity and betrayal threaten her engagement to Elvino, leading to a dramatic climax where Amina's somnambulism is revealed, proving her innocence. La Sonnambula remains a beloved work in the operatic repertoire.
