Ogni mattina milioni di persone escono di casa, salgono su un'auto, un autobus o un treno, percorrono chilometri e raggiungono un edificio nel quale, molto spesso, trascorreranno gran parte della giornata davanti a un computer.
Poi, alla sera, compiono lo stesso percorso al contrario.
Per decenni è sembrato normale. Ma lo è ancora?
SMART WORKING. ADESSO. parte da una domanda volutamente semplice: se una determinata attività può essere svolta a distanza senza compromettere il servizio, perché continuiamo a considerare obbligatorio lo spostamento della persona?
La questione diventa ancora più urgente in un'epoca nella quale il cambiamento climatico sta modificando concretamente le condizioni della nostra vita quotidiana. Ondate di calore più intense, precipitazioni estreme, allagamenti, congestione urbana, inquinamento e infrastrutture sotto pressione non appartengono più soltanto agli scenari del futuro. Sono elementi con i quali città , imprese e lavoratori devono già fare i conti.
Questo libro non sostiene che lo smart working possa risolvere il cambiamento climatico, né propone di svuotare gli uffici o trasformare ogni abitazione in un luogo di lavoro permanente.
La tesi è più concreta.
Smettere di produrre mobilità quando la mobilità non serve.
Un medico deve raggiungere l'ospedale. Un operaio deve entrare in fabbrica. Un manutentore deve trovarsi davanti all'impianto sul quale interviene. Un corriere deve percorrere fisicamente le strade.
Ma chi utilizza un computer, consulta database remoti, scrive documenti digitali e trascorre buona parte della giornata comunicando attraverso Internet deve necessariamente percorrere trenta, quaranta o cinquanta chilometri per farlo?
Partendo da dati e studi di IPCC, WMO, Copernicus, Istat, ISPRA, INAIL, Banca d'Italia, Commissione europea, Eurofound, OECD e altre istituzioni, il libro affronta il rapporto tra clima, pendolarismo, emissioni, lavoro, produttività , tempo personale e organizzazione delle città .
Senza nascondere i problemi del lavoro remoto: Isolamento, diritto alla disconnessione, consumi domestici, sicurezza, differenze fra professioni, necessità di incontro e collaborazione sono aspetti reali e vengono affrontati come tali.
Il punto è capire quando la presenza produce valore e quando produce soltanto uno spostamento.
Lo smart working diventa così qualcosa di diverso da un benefit aziendale: può essere uno strumento di organizzazione della mobilità , di adattamento agli eventi estremi e di razionalizzazione di un modello di lavoro nato quando documenti, strumenti, telefoni e persone dovevano necessariamente trovarsi nello stesso edificio.
