Promulgata il 15 maggio 1891 da Papa Leone XIII, Rerum Novarum (Delle Cose Nuove) è universalmente riconosciuta come l'atto fondativo della moderna dottrina sociale cattolica. In un'epoca sconvolta dalla rivoluzione industriale e dalle profonde trasformazioni economiche e sociali del XIX secolo, l'enciclica segna il primo intervento sistematico del magistero ecclesiastico sulle questioni sociali, con l'intento di offrire una risposta morale e spirituale alla cosiddetta questione operaia.
Papa Leone XIII, pontefice di grande cultura e sensibilità politica, affronta con lucidità la condizione drammatica del proletariato industriale, stretto tra l'indifferenza del liberalismo economico e le promesse rivoluzionarie del socialismo. Denuncia la miseria, lo sfruttamento e la mancanza di tutele per milioni di lavoratori, condanna l'abolizione della proprietà privata proposta dai socialisti e difende con forza la dignità del lavoro umano, ponendolo al centro di ogni progetto di giustizia sociale.
Nel documento, Leone XIII non si limita a criticare i modelli ideologici dominanti - il capitalismo selvaggio da un lato e il collettivismo socialista dall'altro - ma propone una terza via, fondata sulla giustizia, la carità cristiana e il riconoscimento della centralità della persona umana. Il lavoro, afferma il Papa, non può essere ridotto a semplice merce soggetta alla legge della domanda e dell'offerta: è invece un'espressione essenziale della dignità dell'uomo. Il salario deve essere giusto, sufficiente a garantire il sostentamento dell'operaio e della sua famiglia, e le condizioni di lavoro devono rispettare la salute, la moralità e il tempo di riposo.
L'enciclica assegna anche un ruolo importante allo Stato, che ha il dovere di intervenire per proteggere i più deboli e promuovere il bene comune, senza però sopprimere l'iniziativa individuale e i corpi intermedi. È in Rerum Novarum che appare per la prima volta, seppur in forma implicita, il principio di sussidiarietà , destinato a diventare uno dei pilastri della dottrina sociale della Chiesa.
Un altro elemento innovativo è l'incoraggiamento alla formazione di associazioni operaie, ispirate ai principi cristiani, per tutelare i diritti dei lavoratori e promuovere la solidarietà . In contrasto con la logica conflittuale della lotta di classe, Leone XIII propone un ideale di collaborazione tra capitale e lavoro, fondato sul rispetto reciproco e sulla giustizia.
L'impatto della Rerum Novarum fu profondo e duraturo: suscitò un vivace dibattito all'interno della Chiesa, alimentò la nascita di movimenti cattolici impegnati nel sociale e diede impulso a iniziative concrete come casse rurali, sindacati cristiani e partiti popolari. Pur criticata da socialisti e liberali per il suo contenuto contro-sistemico, l'enciclica rappresentò un punto di svolta anche per l'impegno politico dei cattolici, in Italia e in Europa.
Nel corso del XX secolo, i papi successori hanno continuato a svilupparne i contenuti in una serie di importanti encicliche sociali - dalla Quadragesimo Anno (1931) di Pio XI alla Centesimus Annus (1991) di Giovanni Paolo II - che ne hanno attualizzato i principi alla luce dei cambiamenti storici: guerra, totalitarismi, globalizzazione, economia di mercato.
Ancora oggi, a oltre un secolo di distanza, Rerum Novarum conserva una sorprendente attualità . In un mondo segnato da diseguaglianze crescenti, crisi del lavoro e nuove forme di precarietà , il suo richiamo alla giustizia, alla solidarietà e alla dignità del lavoratore rimane un punto di riferimento insostituibile. Più che un testo chiuso, è l'inizio di un cammino: quello della Chiesa al fianco dell'uomo, dentro la storia e per la costruzione di una società più giusta, fondata sul rispetto della persona e sulla ricerca del bene comune.
