Nel maggio del 1939, mentre l'Europa precipita verso la guerra e la persecuzione nazista costringe migliaia di ebrei alla fuga, 937 uomini, donne e bambini salgono a bordo della St. Louis, in partenza da Amburgo verso Cuba. Hanno venduto tutto, lasciato le loro case e affidato il futuro a un biglietto e alla speranza di trovare, oltre l'oceano, un porto sicuro.
Ma i confini si chiudono e le porte dell'America restano sbarrate.
La loro odissea diventa il simbolo di un mondo incapace di accogliere, dove l'indifferenza si nasconde dietro la burocrazia, le leggi e la convenienza politica. Al centro della vicenda emerge la figura del capitano Gustav Schröder, un uomo che non cercava gloria né eroismo, ma che di fronte al destino dei suoi passeggeri sceglie di non voltarsi dall'altra parte.
Nessun porto per la libertà racconta una storia vera di speranza, paura, coraggio e responsabilità . È la storia di una nave diventata il simbolo di un'umanità respinta e di un uomo che, quando il mondo sembrava aver già deciso, scelse di dire no.
