Le Waffen-SS, la sua propaggine più famosa, sono state la più straordinaria formazione politico-militare che l'umanità abbia mai conosciuto. Durante la Seconda guerra mondiale, le Waffen-SS contavano un milione di volontari provenienti da ventotto Paesi diversi. Tutti questi ragazzi erano venuti di loro spontanea volontà a offrire la propria vita (402.000 morirono in battaglia) per una causa che aveva richiesto ogni grammo della loro vita fisica e della loro volontà . Le SS erano solo una manciata all'inizio dell'hitlerismo. Ci volle un'enorme quantità di fede per impadronirsi di loro e poi consumarli affinché questo dono assoluto, questa disciplina libera e totale e la sovrana convinzione di portare al mondo un nuovo tipo di uomo potessero sbocciare.
Se guardiamo criticamente al corso e alla conclusione della guerra nel 1945, vediamo il culmine di un lungo processo iniziato con l'emergere delle religioni bibliche, ossia che la morale e la nozione di peccato hanno sostituito il senso dell'onore e della politica. Il degno avversario è stato trasformato in un nemico assoluto, portatore di tutti i vizi che si oppongono alla civiltà e che devono essere convertiti o eliminati ad ogni costo.
Ora si è scatenata una guerra globale non solo tra popoli, ma tra diverse visioni del mondo, alcune basate sui diritti e sull'uguaglianza di tutti gli uomini, sull'individualismo universalista e nomade, altre sulla mistica della razza, sulla valorizzazione dell'atteggiamento eroico che supera le divisioni del tempo e sul valore della comunità . Considerando che esistono leggi superiori a quelle degli Stati, la nozione di crimine, che prima era esclusivamente individuale, è stata ampliata in crimini contro l'umanità e applicata a un sistema, a un'ideologia e persino a un'intera nazione.
