Istoria Della Costituzione Unigenitus, by Pierre-François Lafitau, delves into the historical context and ramifications of the papal bull Unigenitus Dei Filius, issued by Pope Clement XI in 1713. This significant document condemned 101 propositions extracted from Pasquier Quesnel's Réflexions morales sur le Nouveau Testament, sparking considerable controversy within the Catholic Church, particularly in France.
Lafitau meticulously examines the events leading up to the bull's promulgation, the theological debates it ignited, and its far-reaching consequences for the relationship between the papacy, the French monarchy, and the Jansenist movement. The book offers a detailed account of the political and religious landscape of the early 18th century, shedding light on the complex interplay of power, doctrine, and dissent that shaped the era. Readers interested in religious history and the history of France will find this work insightful.
