I Martiri di Castelfidardo di Anatole de Ségur, pubblicato a Parigi nel 1861 e oggi riproposto in una nuova edizione italiana annotata e illustrata, rappresenta una delle più intense testimonianze europee della crisi del potere temporale e della stagione finale del Risorgimento. L'autore, aristocratico francese e scrittore cattolico, trasformò la sconfitta dell'esercito pontificio del 18 settembre 1860 in un racconto di fede e sacrificio: la battaglia combattuta sulle colline marchigiane, presso il santuario di Loreto, divenne per lui il teatro di un martirologio moderno. Giovani nobili e borghesi francesi, accorsi a difendere il Papa sotto il comando del generale de La Moricière e del marchese de Pimodan, caddero contro le truppe piemontesi del generale Cialdini. Ségur raccolse le loro lettere, i testamenti spirituali, i gesti di pietà sul campo, componendo una cronaca edificante che superava la sfera militare per inscriversi in quella della memoria religiosa.
Il valore dell'opera non risiede nell'imparzialità - che non era l'intento - ma nella limpida parzialità di uno sguardo che trasfigura la sconfitta in vittoria morale. Le pagine dedicate a Pimodan e ai volontari franco-belgi delineano figure cavalleresche, animate dall'idea che morire per il Papa fosse morire per la Chiesa, e quindi per Dio. Accanto alla ricostruzione degli eventi, l'opera custodisce un patrimonio di voci commoventi: madri che incoraggiano i figli alla partenza, giovani che affidano alle ultime lettere l'orgoglio del sacrificio, sacerdoti che accompagnano i soldati all'altare prima dello scontro. È in questo intreccio di cronaca, devozione e pathos che il libro ha trovato, sin dalla sua prima edizione, un pubblico europeo sensibile alla dimensione spirituale del conflitto.
L'edizione 2025, curata e arricchita da nuove illustrazioni e apparati critici, invita a rileggere Castelfidardo come un crocevia di memorie: da un lato il mito risorgimentale italiano, dall'altro la leggenda cattolica che interpretava la sconfitta come martirio. Per i marchigiani di oggi, il libro assume un valore ulteriore: rievoca un momento in cui la loro terra fu al centro della storia d'Europa, testimone di uno scontro che portò l'Italia unita a bussare alle porte di Loreto e Ancona. Quelle colline, quei borghi, quelle campagne furono scenario di una guerra combattuta letteralmente sotto casa, tra lacerazioni e speranze.
Leggere I Martiri di Castelfidardo significa allora non soltanto accostarsi a un testo devozionale ottocentesco, ma interrogare la memoria profonda delle Marche: una regione che, pur marginale rispetto ai grandi centri del potere, si trovò a essere teatro di decisioni epocali. Per i marchigiani di oggi, che vivono in una terra orgogliosa della propria identità e insieme aperta al mondo, la lezione è duplice: riconoscere il valore universale del sacrificio e riscoprire la forza della propria storia locale.
Queste pagine, intrise di dolore e di speranza, parlano ancora a chi percorre i luoghi di Castelfidardo, Loreto, Osimo, Ancona. Esse ricordano che le Marche non furono solo spettatrici, ma protagoniste di un dramma europeo, e che il sangue versato allora, sia pure in una causa controversa, ha contribuito a fare della regione un crocevia di culture, memorie e spiritualità . Accostarsi a quest'opera significa dunque riconnettersi a radici profonde e trarne motivazione: se i giovani di un tempo seppero sacrificare tutto per ciò in cui credevano, anche noi marchigiani possiamo oggi custodire con fierezza il nostro patrimonio storico, culturale e civile.
