All'alba del 6 agosto 1945, un ragazzo di sedici anni di nome Kenji Takahashi fa colazione con la madre e la sorella minore in una casa di legno alla periferia di Hiroshima. Kenji sopravvive, ma la vita che conosceva è sepolta sotto le rovine. Trasformato in hibakusha, si trascina dietro per decenni le cicatrici visibili e invisibili di quel giorno: il dolore fisico, le perdite irreparabili, il silenzio imposto da una società che a volte preferiva dimenticare.
Decenni dopo, già vecchio, Kenji decide di scrivere la sua storia. Non per chiedere compassione o cercare vendetta, ma per lasciare una testimonianza che sopravviva alla sua voce. In prima persona, ricostruisce con crudezza e tenerezza la Hiroshima della sua infanzia, il momento dell'esplosione, i giorni di fuoco e di morte, e i lunghi anni di ricostruzione fisica ed emotiva che seguirono.
