Nella Genesi, Aseneth compare tre volte: viene data in sposa a Giuseppe dal faraone, diventa madre di Manasse ed Efraim, e il titolo sacerdotale di suo padre viene ricordato perché dice qualcosa sull'ascesa sociale del marito. Lei non pronuncia mai una parola, non desidera, non teme e non decide nulla che appaia sulla pagina.
Da qualche parte nel mondo antico, uno scrittore trovò tutto questo intollerabile, e scrisse il resto della sua storia.
Il risultato è un racconto greco di ventinove capitoli che restituisce ad Aseneth tutto ciò che la Genesi le aveva negato: un'infanzia a Eliopoli, nel cuore del culto solare egizio, una torre piena di idoli, un primo incontro che termina con un rifiuto, e sette giorni trascorsi nella cenere e nel silenzio. Poi il cielo si apre. Un visitatore scende all'ora del sorgere della stella del mattino, pronuncia su di lei un nome nuovo e fa comparire un favo di miele che un istante prima non esisteva. Nessuno ha mai trovato un accordo sul significato di questa scena. Ed è proprio questo uno dei motivi per cui il testo è sopravvissuto.
Questa è la guida completa a una delle narrazioni più straordinarie giunte fino a noi dal mondo antico. È stata tramandata in novantuno manoscritti e nove lingue nel corso di quattordici secoli, da comunità che parlavano greco, siriaco, armeno, latino, antico francese, medio inglese, slavo ecclesiastico, amarico e rumeno. Quasi nessuno, oggi, l'ha letta.
