Nei territori di Forcabobolina, Villa Reale, Villa Toppi e delle colline attorno alle chiese di Santa Maria de Criptis e della Madonna del Carmine, un gruppo di uomini e donne decide di ribellarsi a un potere percepito come crudele e ingiusto.
La loro è una sfida disperata, destinata probabilmente alla sconfitta fin dall'inizio. Eppure, dietro quella congiura si nasconde un profondo desiderio di libertà e dignità . La repressione sarà durissima: arresti, torture, processi, condanne ai lavori forzati, esecuzioni pubbliche e decapitazioni. Più di cento contadini finiranno nelle carceri del Regno, travolti da una macchina repressiva spietata.
Attraverso i verbali originali degli interrogatori conservati presso l'Archivio di Stato di Chieti, le lettere ufficiali dell'epoca, le sentenze e le testimonianze dei protagonisti, l'autore ricostruisce una storia vera rimasta nell'ombra per oltre due secoli. Emergono così figure straordinarie come Ignazio Iezzi, leader della rivolta condannato a morte, Ignazio Della Rovere, simbolo della miseria e dell'abbandono, e decine di uomini e donne comuni che pagarono un prezzo altissimo per aver osato opporsi all'autorità .
