Nella primavera del 325, l'uomo più potente del mondo romano convocò tutti i vescovi cristiani che riuscì a raggiungere in una piccola città sulle rive di un lago, nell'odierna Turchia. Si chiamava Costantino. Il suo problema era semplice: la Chiesa, sulla cui unità aveva fondato la stabilità del proprio impero, si stava lacerando a causa di un'unica domanda esplosiva. Gesù Cristo era eterno insieme a Dio Padre, oppure era stato creato da Dio?
Il Concilio di Nicea avrebbe dovuto porre fine alla disputa.
Non lo fece.
Ciò che seguì quel celebre voto quasi unanime, con il Credo firmato, i dissidenti esiliati e l'imperatore trionfante, non fu la pace. Fu la prima mossa di una guerra durata cinquantasei anni, fatta di concili, controformule di fede e mutevoli alleanze imperiali. Il più tenace difensore del concilio sarebbe stato mandato in esilio per ben cinque volte. Una serie di imperatori avrebbe smantellato attivamente le conclusioni di Nicea, mentre la teologia apparentemente sconfitta si sarebbe diffusa in un intero continente grazie a missionari che i vescovi riuniti al concilio non avrebbero mai potuto prevedere.
Il Concilio di Nicea racconta la storia vera e drammatica di una delle assemblee più importanti della storia umana. Non la versione edulcorata in cui vescovi illuminati concordano una dottrina eterna e il cristianesimo rimane unito per sempre, ma quella reale: uno scontro tra fede autentica, potere politico senza freni e ostinazione umana, che richiese più di mezzo secolo per essere realmente risolto.

- Perché fu infine necessario un imperatore completamente diverso, con un approccio al potere completamente diverso, per portare davvero a compimento ciò che Nicea aveva iniziato
- Come una formula contesa tra rivolte, esili e l'intero apparato coercitivo dell'Impero romano divenne l'insieme di parole che miliardi di cristiani recitano ancora ogni settimana, senza conoscere questa storia
Questa è la storia della fede sottoposta alla pressione politica. Di convinzioni messe alla prova dal potere. Di una sola parola scelta al posto di un'alternativa quasi identica, diversa per una sola lettera, che divise un impero e plasmò una civiltà .
