Frutto di quasi trent'anni di esperienza nella formazione sulla comunicazione in ambito sanitario, il volume offre ai volontari ospedalieri uno strumento chiaro, essenziale e rigoroso per affrontare il colloquio di sostegno con il paziente. Non si tratta di informazione clinica, né di consenso informato, né di supporto psicoterapeutico. Il testo si concentra invece su ciò che davvero definisce il ruolo del volontario: la capacità di essere presenti, di ascoltare, di comunicare in modo empatico e rispettoso, tutelando al tempo stesso il paziente, il reparto e se stessi.
Attraverso un linguaggio accessibile ma fondato su solide basi teoriche, il libro accompagna il lettore nella comprensione delle dinamiche della relazione di aiuto in ospedale, fornendo indicazioni pratiche per gestire il colloquio, il silenzio, le emozioni intense, il pianto, il rapporto con i familiari e i confini del proprio ruolo. Ampio spazio è dedicato anche agli aspetti di sicurezza relazionale, alla distinzione del proprio sé dall'altro e alla prevenzione del sovraccarico emotivo.
