One owns a flat. The other pays rent that rises every year.
Neither works harder. Neither is careless with money. Neither knows what separated them.
The difference was money that arrived early. A deposit at twenty-eight. A signature on a mortgage application. Two years in a childhood bedroom while everybody else paid rent. A parent who could have covered a bad quarter and was rarely asked to, but whose existence changed what could be attempted.
