The transatlantic slave trade dominates public memory, but it was only one part of a much larger history. In The Islamic Slave Trade, Lisa Pohovich follows four distinct systems - the Trans-Saharan, Red Sea and Indian Ocean, Mediterranean and Barbary, and Black Sea and Caucasus routes - revealing how they operated across different continents, different centuries, and different empires.
Rather than beginning with ideology, this book begins with people.
Each chapter opens with the story of a documented individual - a girl testifying before a British consul, a man purchased and immediately freed in the Sahara, a survivor whose court records still exist, a parliamentarian who shattered decades of silence with a single speech. From those stories, the larger history unfolds.
Drawing on primary sources, government records, court documents, treaties, diaries, and the work of leading historians, Pohovich traces the legal framework that connected four otherwise separate slave systems for more than a millennium. She also follows that framework into the modern world, asking difficult questions about why some forms of bondage disappeared while others evolved into new systems that still exist today.
This is not a book that tells readers what to think.
It does not ask them to condemn an entire religion, excuse uncomfortable history, or accept simplistic narratives about civilizations or cultures. Instead, it presents the historical record as completely as the evidence allows, distinguishes established fact from contested interpretation, and leaves the final judgment where it belongs - with the reader.
