Iphigenia in Taurus is a play written by the renowned German author Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. It tells the story of Iphigenia, the daughter of the Greek king Agamemnon, who is believed to have been sacrificed to the gods during the Trojan War. However, unbeknownst to her family, she was saved by the goddess Artemis and taken to the land of Tauris, where she has been serving as a priestess. The play begins with Iphigenia's brother Orestes and his friend Pylades arriving in Tauris, where they are captured by the locals and brought before Iphigenia. She recognizes Orestes and reveals her true identity to him. She tells him that she has been ordered by the goddess to sacrifice any Greeks who come to Tauris, but she is torn between her duty and her love for her own people. As the play progresses, Iphigenia and Orestes form a plan to escape Tauris and return to Greece. However, their plan is complicated by the arrival of Thoas, the king of Tauris, who is determined to prevent their escape. The play culminates in a dramatic confrontation between Iphigenia, Orestes, and Thoas, which ultimately leads to a resolution of their conflicts and a happy ending.Iphigenia in Taurus is a powerful and moving play that explores themes of duty, sacrifice, and redemption. It is considered one of Goethe's greatest works and has been widely performed and studied in the centuries since its publication.THIS 78 PAGE ARTICLE WAS EXTRACTED FROM THE BOOK: The Dramatic Works of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
