This thesis investigates the differences between subtitling and fansubbing practices regarding rendering of non-verbal codes in modern Egyptian films, especially if it encompasses cultural references. The main objective of the thesis is to depict whether there are any differences in subtitling or fansubbing Egyptian films when it comes to handling non-verbal codes. The study addresses the problems subtitlers face when dealing with non-verbal codes. Hence, it examines how professional subtitling and fansubbing rendered these modes from Arabic to English. The study applies two of Ferrer-Simo's (2005) tools of subtitling on two of the non-verbal channels proposed by Gottleib (1998). The study, as well, has identified strategies adopted by professional subtitlers to tackle these codes in the English subtitles.
