Jesus Christ's Atonement
A Three-Volume Study
What does it actually mean that Jesus Christ atoned for the sins of the world? Not in summary - but in full? Most of us have heard the doctrine all our lives and yet, if pressed, would struggle to explain it. Keith C. Warner was a Seminary teacher when he faced that question honestly, and it changed the course of his life. What followed was more than five decades of disciplined study. Warner pursued the original languages of scripture - studying some Greek, and Hebrew to understand what the words actually meant before they were translated - and traced how different cultures and traditions across history have understood the atoning work of Christ.
A Three-Volume Study

Warner pursued the original languages of scripture - studying some Greek, and Hebrew to understand what the words actually meant before they were translated - and traced how different cultures and traditions across history have understood the atoning work of Christ.
He walked the land of Israel to see where the Savior walked. He read the Old Testament as prophecy awaiting its fulfillment. He did not pursue this as an academic exercise. He pursued it as a man who needed to understand the Atonement in order to teach it, and eventually in order to live it. That understanding was not confined to the classroom. For years, Warner served as a religious special counselor in the Utah prison system, bringing the message of the Atonement to men and women in some of the hardest circumstances of their lives.
The doctrine he had studied so carefully became, in those rooms, something he had to be able to explain simply and truthfully - to people for whom it was not abstract at all. In 1973, he felt an overwhelming prompting to put his research and experience on paper. For nearly three years, he wrote without stopping. When the work was finished, he placed it in a drawer - not for publication, but as a legacy for his family. For years, he would occasionally be moved to share a copy with a friend. Those who read it said it changed their lives.
