Buku ini ditulis berdasarkan pengalaman nyata Nio Joe Lan yang ditahan di dalam penjara dan kamp konsentrasi oleh pemerintah pendudukan Jepang ketika Jepang menguasai Indonesia yang pada saat itu disebut Hindia Belanda.
Pengalaman Nio Joe Lan ditahan bersama ratusan tokoh Tionghoa dari Pulau Jawa di Jakarta (Bukit Duri 26 April 1942 - 9 September 1943) dan Serang (9 September 1943 - 15 Februari 1944), dan terakhir dipindahkan ke kamp konsentrasi di Cimahi (16 Februari 1944 - 27 Agustus 1945) bersama ribuan tahanan Belanda dan Eropa. Pengalamanpengarang semasa di dalam tahanan, ditulis dengan mendetail dan menarik dan kemudian di terbitkan Lotus Co. pada tahun 1946.
Pada tahun 2008 buku Dalem Tawanan Djepang diterbitkan kembali oleh Komunitas Bambu tetap seperti aslinya dengan tambahan catatan kaki seperti pada edisi yang pertama.
Penyadur menulis ulang ke dalam bahasa Indonesia modern sehingga mudah dibaca dan dipahami pembaca sekarang, karena menyadari makna penting buku ini sebagai catatan sejarah bangsa yang wajib diketahui generasi muda agar tidak lupa terhadap sejarah masa lalu bangsa sendiri.
