If God became man, the claim runs, then the eternal Word took flesh; and if he took flesh, then his death upon the cross paid a debt contracted in Adam and inherited by every man born since. This volume weighs both claims in seventy-five questions.

The sentence upon which the whole doctrine turns - And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us - is opened first. Four senses are available to it and no fifth: a union of essences, an indwelling by essence, an incarnation by real becoming, or an indwelling of good pleasure. Three are shown impossible or unclaimed; the fourth is granted, and it establishes nothing the doctrine needs.

The redemption is then weighed against their own four theories of how it worked - ransom, satisfaction, penal substitution, moral influence - and against the justice they themselves ascribe to God.

The volume then turns from undoing to establishing. It asks what the gospels put in his own mouth, and finds a servant who prays, who is sent, who ascribes his acts to another, and who says plainly that his Father is greater than he. And it closes by setting down, openly and as a statement rather than as a binding, what Islam holds concerning the Messiah and his mother.

Every scriptural quotation is collated word for word against the Revised Standard Version; the Qur'an is quoted in Qarai's translation; the councils from Tanner, the definitions from Denzinger-Hünermann, the Catechism in its official English. Where the binding edition diverged from the wording in circulation, the divergence is declared and nothing is built upon the disputed word - and this holds whether the divergence runs against the argument or in its favour.

Not one argument in this book is raised against Christ, peace be upon him. Every argument is raised against a claim ascribed to him which, on the showing of their own texts, he never made.
