In the Time of Herod by Richard Mascara is a sweeping and meticulously crafted historical fiction novel that delves into the turbulent life and reign of Herod the Great, King of Judea. Set against the backdrop of Roman imperial expansion and the volatile politics of the ancient Near East, the story traces Herod's rise from a politically entangled childhood under his father Antipater's influence to his strategic alliance with Rome and his controversial marriage to Mariamne, a Hasmonean princess.
As Herod battles to reclaim Judea from the Parthian-backed Antigonus II Mattathias, his military prowess and political cunning come to the fore. Yet, his reign is anything but secure. Court intrigues, fueled by deep-seated rivalries and suspicions, especially surrounding Mariamne and the Hasmonean lineage, threaten to unravel his authority. The influence of figures like Aristobulus, Mariamne's brother and a popular High Priest, only deepens Herod's paranoia.
Haunted by betrayal and consumed by jealousy, Herod's descent into madness is marked by personal tragedy and political instability. As his mental state deteriorates, his brother Pheroras steps in to manage the kingdom, while Herod channels his obsession into monumental architectural achievements, from the expansion of the Second Temple to the construction of Masada and Caesarea Maritima.
Was Herod a visionary ruler who reshaped Judea, or a tyrant undone by his own fears? In the Time of Herod offers a vivid and thought-provoking portrait of a man whose legacy still echoes through history.
