In Fancy Dress is a novel written by Mark Andre Raffalovich in 1886. The story revolves around the life of a young man named Maurice who is struggling to find his place in society. He is a member of the upper class but feels disconnected from their lifestyle and values. Maurice is also struggling with his sexuality and is attracted to both men and women. The novel is set in the late 19th century, a time when homosexuality was not widely accepted. Maurice's struggles with his sexuality are a central theme of the book. He is torn between his desire for a conventional life and his attraction to men. The title of the book, In Fancy Dress, refers to the idea that people often disguise their true selves in order to fit in with society. Maurice is no exception, and he finds himself wearing a figurative mask to hide his true feelings. The novel explores themes of identity, sexuality, and societal expectations. Raffalovich's writing is introspective and poetic, with a focus on the inner thoughts and emotions of the characters. Overall, In Fancy Dress is a thought-provoking and compelling novel that offers a glimpse into the struggles of a young man trying to find his place in a society that doesn't accept him for who he is.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
